NPR reported that two separate nationwide cheese recalls are underway, affecting both shredded cheese and grated Pecorino Romano products.

1. Shredded Cheese Recall (Metal Contamination Concern)
• The FDA classified a recall of shredded cheese products as Class II, meaning eating the cheese may cause temporary or medically reversible health issues.
• The recall includes various shredded cheeses like mozzarella, Italian-style blends, pizza blends, and mozzarella-provolone mixes sold under multiple private-label brands at major retailers (e.g., Target, Walmart, Aldi).
• Products were distributed in dozens of states and Puerto Rico with sell-by dates into early 2026.

2. Pecorino Romano Recall (Listeria Risk)
• A separate recall affects grated Pecorino Romano cheeses after routine testing detected Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria that can cause serious illness, especially in vulnerable groups.
• The recalled Pecorino Romano products were sold under brand names including Ambriola, Locatelli, Boar’s Head, Pinna, and Member’s Mark, with expiration dates into spring 2026.
• No illnesses have been reported so far, but the FDA and companies involved are urging consumers not to eat these products and to discard or return them for a refund.

What Consumers Should Do
If you have any of the affected shredded cheeses or grated Pecorino Romano in your fridge, check the product details and sell-by dates, and do not consume them. Instead, dispose of them or return them to the retailer for a refund.
